Happy Birthday Indoor Cat or What Am I Even Doing Here?
Indoor Cat Studios turns 1 year old in a few short weeks! The time has gone by both very slowly and somehow very quickly. When I look back at the pieces I’ve created over the past year I see the growth and the change as I have been honing my skills and improving my craft. Thank you to everyone who purchased some of my earliest pieces in support, you truly are angels on earth and gave me the motivation to keep moving forward.
The question I’ve been grappling with this entire time (and really don’t see figuring out anytime soon) is what the hell is my artistic POV? To me, someone’s POV in art encompasses more than just a style - it’s a way of reflecting how you see the world, themes you enjoy exploring, colour palettes, narratives and on and on and on. This is a really tough question to answer - essentially I’m asking who the fk am I even? I’ve been to a lot of therapy in my time and I still don’t have a good answer for that. I think I figured out who I was more or less in the corporate world (personality hire HAHAHA) but figuring out who I am as an artist is a whole new can of worms.
One way to think of an artistic POV is as a personal “brand”, which is to say even if someone grows and their work evolves there is some sort of connecting thread that makes it immediately recognizable as theirs. I’ve tried countless exercises in an effort to figure out my “brand” using colours, language, art movements, textures, it’s a never ending moving target. Even if I ever feel like I truly nail it down, I hope I keep growing as a person and allowing my POV to grow alongside me. Now if only I could figure out what that is…
